Having A God Given Dream Fulfilled!

Psalm 37: 3-5 (Amplified Bible)
3Trust (lean on, rely on, and be confident) in the Lord and do good; so shall you dwell in the land and feed surely on His faithfulness, and truly you shall be fed.
4 Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He will give you the desires and secret petitions of your heart.
5 Commit your way to the Lord [roll and repose each care of your load on Him]; trust (lean on, rely on, and be confident) also in Him and He will bring it to pass.

Psalm 37: 3-5 (New Living Translation)
3 Trust in the LORD and do good.
Then you will live safely in the land and prosper.
4 Take delight in the LORD,
and he will give you your heart’s desires.
5 Commit everything you do to the LORD.
Trust him, and he will help you.

This is a passage from the Bible that has become the foundation of my life’s Story – the way that God uses my life to fulfill God’s purposes in me!

Let me tell you a story!

I was a teenager and had just started my walk with God when I came across this passage of scripture. I mulled over it and felt that God would have me write down, or express in solid, specific terms what the desires of my heart were. And so I wrote down three things that were upmost in my heart.

They were:
1. Do my own radio broadcast. One of my best friends was a radio announcer on Public Radio Station.
2. Fly around the world. My best friend and I wanted to be air force pilots, but he passed away in an accident, when we were still 16 years of age.
3. Take the Gospel Story to the ends of the world.

Well my story is that God has been true to His Word and fulfilled the desires of my heart and “ …exceedingly abundantly above all I could ask or think according to the riches of His glory …” (Ephesians 3: 17-21)

First, I remember coming back from Bible College and been asked by the Director of Back To The Bible Broadcast, if I wanted to host a music program for young people, featuring music that they will enjoy, and as a means of telling them God’s Story through music! What an answer to my desire.
Second, I remember my first train ride across to India on my way to Bible College, a first step in my desire #2. Then every June going to Bible School and returning home for summer vacation for four years of college!

But then, in 1969 coming to Bible College in Seattle from Sri Lanka with stops in Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan! Since then the many trips from the USA to Sri Lanka and India stopping either in Europe or in Asia, thus “going around the world”, many times with Linda and my family! God was Good to fulfill this desire!

Third, is a desire which he continues to fulfill and I stand back amazed at how God is fulfilling my desires. Many times I think how very much like God, in the way He responds, and I think of the passage in Isaiah 55: 8-11.

Yes amazing:
8 “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD.
“And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.
9 For just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so my ways are higher than your ways
and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.
10 “The rain and snow come down from the heavens
and stay on the ground to water the earth.
They cause the grain to grow,
producing seed for the farmer
and bread for the hungry.
11 It is the same with my word.
I send it out, and it always produces fruit.
It will accomplish all I want it to,
and it will prosper everywhere I send it

I think of how God has led me throughout my life and I see how he has added one line upon another line, and it has not seemed significant, but God was weaving a tapestry of exquisiteness in my life and today I see what was happening and it gives me goose bumps of gratitude to God!

One example, was when I was in Bible College in India, I took a class in Homiletics, with Reverend Kenneth Bauman, who taught us the Inductive Method of Bible Study as a first step in preparation for a preaching/teaching outline. (See our Manual in the Resources Section of our blog in Manual 1). This became the foundation for my teaching and preaching throughout my life. I also then used it as a transferable concept in Leadership and Discipleship Training.

Little did I realize that God had been preparing me and building my life and ministry from the beginning! It came into focus so very strongly, as Linda and I were introduced to International Orality Network (ION) at their annual conference in Orlando, Florida in December 2007. Lights went off in my brain, fireworks in my heart as I realized God’s unique working in fulfilling my third desire!  This was just the beginning and he continues to make it a reality!

Yes, does God keep His promises? Does he fulfill our hearts desires as we “…commit them to him …”? Yes, a thousand times, yes! In His Time and In His Ways, because His “ … thoughts are higher than our thoughts … His ways higher than our ways …”

God WILL do the same for you!

Having A God Given Dream!

A Story from the Bible that can be applied to everyone, and that should be at the heart of everyone, is the story of Joseph found in the book of Genesis, chapters 37-50. It will take only a few minutes to read, but it will and can change your life if you realize what God is trying to say in this passage! Please take the time to read the whole story in your Bible!

A brief summary of the story. Joseph is 17 years old and is his father Jacob’s favorite son. He is given a coat of many colors as a present. His 11 brothers are jealous and angry with him. To add to this, Joseph tells them that he has had some dreams, where in one all his brothers are bowing to him. The second dream, Joseph’s parents and brothers are all bowing to him. Which makes his brothers even more angry!

Sometime soon after, his brothers get the opportunity to get their revenge, and so the brothers take away his beautiful coat, and sells him off to some merchants, who will sell him as a servant to some rich person, to work in their home.

He is working as a slave, but given a lot of power and authority by his master to run his whole household. But Joseph is falsely accused by his master’s wife and is thrown into an Egyptian prison. Rather than his dream been fulfilled he is having the reverse effect. Now he is a prisoner. But God is with him ALL this time.

Soon he is promoted to be second in command of the empire of Egypt. His interpretation of the dream of the Pharoah comes true. Seven years of plenty and then seven years of famine! So what happens? The brothers come to Egypt looking for food, as they hear that there is food available in Egypt.

They don’t recognize Joseph their young brother, is the one they meet in charge of the food supply, when they bow down before him. In the course of events, Joseph reveals who he is, and forgives them and finally the whole family is reunited!

It takes 22 years for the dream that he had to be fulfilled. But Joseph hung on to the dream, knowing that, “God had a plan and a purpose for good …” (Jeremiah 29:11) for his life.

This is God’s desire for your life too! Ask him for His plan and purpose for you and then don’t give up in believing that God will bring it to pass!
God gave Joseph a dream that was big and hard to believe. This made him unpopular in his family, but Joseph believed God and clung on to his God given dream.
a. What is a God given dream that you are nurturing in your heart and life?
b. If you don’t have a dream, would you ask God to give you a dream, a vision a plan for your life? He has promised to do this for you in Jeremiah 29:11.
